When your life is in the hands of strangers

Quotes from Patients:

"I have a child who has traveled overseas. She got really ill and UMED would have really helped. They would have known she was allergic to penicillin."

"With UMED the doctor can know my complete medical history before I get there"

1. What is UMED?

UMED is a medical records storage system.  We gather a person's medical history and store it in our computer system.  It is then available to the person by calling our toll-free number twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

2. How do I know my records will be secure and confidential?

Access to your record is controlled by a password that you have designated.  In addition, the UMED database is not accessible via the Internet and therefore, cannot be "hacked" into.

3. If I am unconscious, how will the attending physician be able to access my record?

If you are unconscious or disoriented, emergency medical personnel are trained to search for identification.  When they do, they will find your UMED card or other membership ID that will be provided to you.  In the absence of your password, our UMED nurses will verify that they are speaking to a bona fide emergency medical care provider before disseminating your medical history to that provider.  (This is the ONLY circumstance under which your record can be retrieved without a password).

4. How do I know that the Hot Line will answer the phone in a timely fashion?

We guarantee that the Hot Line will be staffed 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, by a staff of registered nurses.

5. What happens if the Database goes down?

UMED's  database is fully backed up every evening to ensure that your medical records will not be lost.  In addition, UMED has backed up all of its computers with redundant systems so that the chance of any lengthy lapse of service is virtually non-existent.

6. How do I know my record is correct?

As soon as we've received your medical history, it is entered into our database by our staff of registered nurses.  Immediately after your medical history is entered, we send a copy to you (and your physician if you subscribe to CRS) for review.  If you find any errors at all you can correct them immediately over the phone.

7. How do I update my UMED records?

With the Emergency Record System you can simply phone in changes any time your medical status has changed. With the Comprehensive Record System you can request that UMED contact your physician about any changes in your medical status.    MORE>
